COLUMBUS, Ohio, Dec. 30 (UPI) — Authorities in Ohio said they arrested a man after he posted a Facebook video of himself drinking alcohol behind the wheel.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said Dustin Rittgers, 28, was pulled over Monday after deputies got a tip from someone about a man driving erratically while drinking behind the wheel and filming himself with a cellphone.
Dispatchers gained information about the driver’s identity and whereabouts from the video, which Rittgers posted to Facebook, the sheriff’s office said.
Rittgers was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, following too closely, marked lane violation and open container in a motor vehicle.
“This situation shows the power of social media. Social media led us straight to this suspect to stop him before he was able to hurt himself or others. Social media is another crime fighting tool we use to keep Franklin County residents safe,” Sheriff Zach Scott said.
Scott said Rittger continued to use Facebook while driving after posting the video.
“I am a good driver, don’t worry,” he wrote in response to a friend’s comment, “I’ve got one finger on the steering wheel Facebooking while it’s raining. Smh, i am good. I am a pro.”
