EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Edmonton Oilers rookie forward Connor McDavid is expected to be out “months” with a broken left clavicle, says general manager Peter Chiarelli.
Chiarelli says McDavid will require surgery after breaking his collarbone in Tuesday night’s 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The first overall pick in this year’s draft was hurt after he crashed into the boards.
“Connor’s such a special player and at such a young age that it’s disappointing. Today feels like a loss,” Chiarelli said. “We won last night and today feels like a loss. But we’ll get by it.”
McDavid had 12 points in 12 games this season and was selected as the NHL’s rookie of the month for October.
The silver lining is he’s young, he’s a strong kid mentally and physically, he’s still developing so he’ll come back probably even stronger,” Chiarelli said. “In my experience with these significant injuries with younger players they come back stronger.”
