LOS ANGELES, July 29 (UPI) — Olivia Wilde and Cara Delevingne reacted with disgust to Cecil the lion’s killing Tuesday on Twitter.
The 31-year-old American actress and 22-year-old English model addressed the incident amid growing public outcry over the animal’s death. Cecil, a well-known wild lion, was discovered skinned and beheaded outside Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe this month.
American dentist Walter Palmer, who hails from Eden Prairie, Minn., and paid $55,000 for the private safari, was subsequently identified as the hunter who killed Cecil. Palmer said he didn’t realize the lion was a park staple and claimed he believed the trip to be legal in a statement Tuesday.
“Ohh the dentist ‘had no idea’ the lion was famous. Because had he known, he would have never murdered it without asking for a selfie first,” Wilde responded. Delevingne simply declared, “This #WalterPalmer is a poor excuse of a human being!”
Protestors began to gather outside Palmer’s dentistry practice, River Bluff Dental, in Bloomington, Minn., on Wednesday. The Twin Cities-based Animal Rights Coalition will lead the demonstration “to protest the death of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe,” along with Palmer’s other “big game” kills.
