CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C., Sept. 3 (UPI) — One U.S. servicemember died and several others were injured after a CH-53E helicopter made a “hard landing” during a training exercise Wednesday night at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
The “CH-53E helicopter belonging to Heavy Helicopter Squadron-464, Marine Aircraft group-29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing” experienced a “hard landing” at about 9 p.m., Capt. Ryan Elizabeth Alvis said, according to WITN.
Camp Lejeune is located near Jacksonville, N.C.
After the crash, eight servicemembers were transported to the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, where one was pronounced dead. Six were scheduled for release while another was in stable condition.
Three others were in stable condition at the Onslow Memorial Hospital and another was taken to the Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
An investigation into the incident has been launched. The identities of the servicemembers involved have not been released.
The name of the deceased servicemember will be released after the next of kin has been notified.
