WASHINGTON (AP) — Child sex offenders make up the largest category of inmates in U.S. military prisons. Yet a full accounting of their crimes and how much time they serve in prison is shielded by an opaque system of justice.
An Associated Press investigation found that since the beginning of 2015 alone, children have been the victims in 133 out of 301 sex crime convictions against service members. The charges range from rape to distributing child pornography.
Child sex assaults committed by service members have received scant public attention in Washington. Congress and the Defense Department have focused largely on preventing and prosecuting adult-on-adult crimes.
Yet Defense Department officials say sex crimes against children are taken very seriously and offenders are likely to receive harsh prison terms.
