Oregon, Ohio changes name ahead of college football championship

OREGON, Ohio, Jan. 6 (UPI) — The city of Oregon, Ohio has decided to temporarily change it’s name to clarify its allegiance ahead of the football championship between Ohio State and Oregon.

Starting Monday and through the college football championship game, the city will be known as “Oregon, Ohio Buckeyes on the Bay, City of Duck Hunters” as declared in a proclamation issued by Mayor Michael Seferian.

“Whereas, the City of Oregon officially adopted its name in 1838 as Oregon Township which happens to be 21 years before the State of Oregon received its statehood in 1859,” reads the proclamation. “And The City of Oregon has been petitioned by residents of the city to make it clear that we are not associated with Oregon University Ducks Football.”

The Oregon Police Department posted the proclamation and said they would make the necessary changes to their social media accounts.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1″; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));
