Oregon Zoo’s ‘super adorable’ 6-week-old caracal kittens venture outside

PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 29 (UPI) — The Oregon Zoo shared video of its 6-week-old caracal kittens exploring their outdoor habitat with their mother by their side.

The zoo said the caracals, a typically elusive species, only ventured outside with their mother for the first time last week, and visitors have since been able to catch brief glimpses of the cats in the zoo’s Predators of the Serengeti area.

“They’ve spent a lot of time out of view of visitors so far,” said Beth Foster, the zoo’s lead caracal keeper. “The space is still new and unfamiliar to them, so they’ve been hiding a lot, taking things slowly and sticking close to mom.”

Foster said the kittens’ mother, Peggy, is an affectionate caretaker.

“Peggy’s been an excellent and very attentive mother,” Foster said. “When her little ones call, she comes right away to check on them.”

Zookeepers said the caracals are currently only a little bigger than domestic kittens, but with much larger ears and paws.

“They’re in their super-adorable phase,” Foster said.
