JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Oct. 17 (UPI) — Paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius, found guilty of killing his girlfriend, will be released from prison to house arrest on Tuesday after serving about a fifth of his sentence, a South African parole board said.
Pistorius, sentenced to five years in prison in the 2013 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, will be placed in “correctional supervision.” Under terms of the release, Pistorius must continue psychotherapy and is not allowed to possess a firearm.
Pistorius, 28, was convicted of culpable homicide — the South African equivalent of manslaughter. The double amputee, known as the “blade runner,” argued he thought an intruder was in the bathroom when he shot through the door, instead killing Steenkamp.
Pistorius’s release has been delayed several times. He was originally scheduled to leave prison in August. Steenkamp’s family have argued he has not served enough time in prison.
Nothing has changed for June and Barry, nothing will bring Reeva back,” attorney Tania Koen said, referring to Steenkamp’s parents. “They are not surprised at all by this announcement. They expected this.”
