PARIS, Oct. 1 (UPI) — Former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld is injecting spicy prints into Uniqlo, a high-end street wear brand leading in basics.
Her 40-piece collection, “Carine Roitfeld for Uniqlo,” made its runway debut Wednesday during Paris Fashion Week ahead of its late October release. The collaborative assortment of printed coats, pocketed pencil skirts and more will be available in Uniqlo stores Oct. 29.
“I love leopard print,” the former model and fashion designer told The Guardian of one of her faux fur coats, a key piece in the collection. “But I made this coat a soft, understated leopard so that you can wear it all the time.”
Another highlight of the fashion maven’s high-profile collaboration with Uniqlo’s Naoki Takizawa is the pencil skirt. All of the styles are statement pieces with a very specific and striking look in mind.
“I wanted the skirts to be just below knee length, that’s my favorite,” Roitfeld said. “And they have pockets, because that’s what gives a pencil skirt attitude.”
Practicality and power seem to have been influential notes as Roitfeld developed the mature collection. Many pieces are masculine at their core but bloom into femininity in the details.
Fashion consultant Jean-Jacques Picart, who considers Uniqlo a client, told WWD “everything that is masculine but womanized will be very popular,” noting the leopard print wool coat will most likely sell out.
