PARIS, Dec. 14 (UPI) — A teacher in a suburb of Paris was stabbed in the throat on Monday by a masked man who said he launched the attack for the Islamic State.
The attack occurred in the Parisian suburb of Aubervilliers at about 7:10 a.m. local time. The teacher was stabbed in the throat and side with box cutters or scissors at the Jean-Perrin preschool.
The attacker fled the scene on foot and a manhunt for the suspect was underway. No children were present at the time of the attack and classes were canceled.
The suspect reportedly arrived to the school while wearing a balaclava head covering and was unarmed, using classroom objects to launch the assault.
France remains on high alert after the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris that left at least 130 people dead. IS — also known as ISIS, ISIL or Daesh — claimed responsibility for the attacks.
“This is for Daesh,” the attacker said Monday, according to a statement by the Bobigny district prosecutor’s office. “This is a warning, this is only the beginning.”
French Education Minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem travelled to the school, calling the attack an “act of great gravity” that was “unacceptable.”
