SUSSEX, England, Aug. 20 (UPI) — A passenger aboard an EasyJet Airbus A320 plane in Sussex, England was tasered and removed from the flight Thursday.
The passenger had reportedly become abusive during a dispute about his luggage. Witnesses say that the individual was arguing with airline staff onboard flight EZY831 about the number of carry-on items he could take on the plane. The plane was due for Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Police were called in around 8 a.m. local time. They shot the suspect with a taser and arrested him immediately. Witnesses say that police calmly asked the man to leave the plane. The man refused to do so, demanding to know why his “man purse” caused a problem as a carry-on. All passengers and crew aboard the plane had to disembark for police interviews.
The flight ultimately departed the Gatwick Airport just before 11 a.m. local time, two-and-a-half hours after it scheduled departure. It touched down in Belfast an hour-and-a-half later.
EasyJet is considered one the country’s largest carrier of passengers. The company is also a budget carrier that has strict rules about the number of carry-on bags a passenger may carry and the charges it incurs for checked baggage. Only one carry-on bag of dimensions no larger than a preset size may be carried.
