Personnel office not the worst in terms of lax cybersecurity

WASHINGTON (AP) — The finger-pointing about who was responsible for the massive U.S. government data breach has started.

The chief operating officer for a federal contractor blamed in part for the breach told Congress on Wednesday there was no evidence that hackers gained access to millions of files in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management using credentials from any of his employees. Credentials are equivalent to electronic keys.

KeyPoint Government Solutions CEO Eric Hess countered assertions by OPM Director Katherine Archuleta to a Senate panel on Tuesday. She told lawmakers that hackers used a stolen KeyPoint credential to break into the network.

Hess and Archuleta were testifying before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
