Picasso, Giacometti poised to set records at NYC auctions

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s spring art auctions get underway Tuesday with works by Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Vincent Van Gogh and other impressionist, modern and contemporary artists.

Picasso’s “Women of Algiers (Version O)” is estimated to bring over $140 million. It’s poised to become the most expensive artwork sold at auction.

Giacometti’s “Pointing Man,” meanwhile, could set an auction record for a sculpture if bidding soars to an expected $130 million.

Both are being offered at Christie’s on May 11.

The spring auctions begin Tuesday at Sotheby’s. It’s offering van Gogh’s “The Allee of Alyscamps.” The autumnal scene was created in 1888 when van Gogh briefly worked alongside his friend Paul Gauguin in Arles, in the south of France. It’s expected to sell for over $40 million.
