JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Aug. 27 (UPI) — South African track star Oscar Pistorius’ parole case will be reviewed on Sept. 18, his spokeswoman announced Thursday.
Pistorius, 28, who was convicted of culpable homicide in the 2013 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, was to have been transferred to house arrest last week after serving 10 months of a five-year sentence; Justice Minister Michael Masutha, urged by South African women’s groups to stop the transfer, ordered Pistorius to remain in prison pending a review of his case.
Masutha argued that, according to his reading of the law, the parole board should begin the consideration of transferring Pistorius to house arrest at the 10-month mark of his term.
Prosecutors are in the process of appealing the verdict, suggesting Pistorius should have been tried for murder instead of for culpable homicide, an equivalent of manslaughter. The appeal is scheduled to begin in November.
Pistorius admitted shooting Steenkamp, through a locked bathroom door, in his Pretoria home, but said at his trial he thought she was an intruder.
