Plane almost collides with drone near Warsaw, Poland

WARSAW , Poland, July 21 (UPI) — A Lufthansa plane approaching Warsaw’s airport was nearly struck by a small drone before arriving safely.

A Lufthansa Embraer ERJ-195, arriving Monday from Munich, was on its final approach to Warsaw’s Chopin International Airport when it came within 300 feet of a drone and nearly collided with it at an altitude of 2,500 feet, airport spokesman Przemyslaw Przybylski said. The plane landed safely about three minutes after the drone was reported.

Przybylski added police, who regard the near-collision as serious, are investigating the incident. The controller of the drone has not been identified.

The plane can carry 64 passengers, but it is unknown how many were aboard the flight.

Mikolaj Karpinski of the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency said the plane’s pilot immediately notified air traffic controllers of the incident, who redirected the plane.

The website Aviation Herald noted the pilot angrily told Warsaw air traffic controllers they “should really take care of your airspace,” and received an apologetic reply.
