Police call death of Missouri auditor an ‘apparent suicide’

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) — Police in suburban St. Louis are calling the death of Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich an “apparent suicide.”

Clayton Police Chief Kevin Murphy says paramedics responded to an emergency call that came in at 9:48 a.m. Thursday. Schweich was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound.

Murphy says one other family member was in the home. He says the family is cooperating with the investigation and that an autopsy will be conducted Friday morning. Murphy declined to provide more information about the death pending the autopsy.

Schweich had announced plans to run for the Republican nomination for governor in 2016.
