Police: Professor at Mississippi campus shot dead, gunman at large

CLEVELAND, Miss., Sept. 14 (UPI) — A gunman opened fire at a college campus in Mississippi Monday, killing a professor and prompting the school to issue a lockdown, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at Delta State University in the town of Cleveland, Miss., officials said. The gunman remains at large. The victim was identified as history professor Ethan Schmidt.

The Clarion Ledger reported that a social sciences professor, who is a suspect in an unrelated shooting, is possibly tied to the shooting at Delta State.

The Bolivar Commercial reported all schools in the Cleveland School District were on lockdown as a precaution.

Police confirmed the shooting and were assisting Delta State University police.

Officials said a victim was taken by an ambulance, but it was unclear if that person was Schmidt or another injured victim.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant pledged the “full support and assistance” of the Department of Public Safety, “including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Mississippi Highway Patrol,” spokeswoman Nicole Webb said.

Mississippi Highway Patrol, Cleveland police and Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department were on campus.

Delta State University is a public school with more than 4,000 students, about 30 percent of which live on campus.
