Pool industry touts water savings in California drought

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) — California is in its fourth year of a devastating drought and the lack of rain is sending farmers, golf course landscapers and everyday homeowners scrambling.

But the swimming pool industry has so far managed to stay afloat despite state-mandated cuts on water use and uncertainty about the future.

In some areas, in fact, swimming pool contractors are busier than they have been in years as homeowners emerge from the recession and have cash to spend on pools.

Water agencies across the state are eying new restrictions on filling or refilling swimming pools after Gov. Jerry Brown’s water conservation orders but swimming pool contractors are fighting back.

They say studies show an average swimming pool uses less water than grass and about the same as a drought-tolerant landscape.
