DOHA, Qatar, Aug. 27 (UPI) — Qatar Airways is loosening policy rules that would previously have fired female flight attendants who became pregnant or married within the first five years of employment.
Female flight attendants who become pregnant will now be offered temporary on-ground jobs under the new policies. Qatar Airways, headquartered in Doha, Qatar, was previously condemned by the United Nation’s International Labor Organization for the airline’s treatment of female cabin crew.
The airline will still require female crew members to notify the company if they are planning to marry within the first five years of employment, a move Qatar Airways said was based on the potential that an employee’s visa status may change because of their marriage and not because the employee is asking for the airline’s permission.
“As the airline matures, the workforce matures,” Rossen Dimitrov, Qatar Airways senior vice president, said at a company event, according to Bloomberg. “You can’t turn to someone who is 35 years old and say ‘No, you can’t have a family, wait.’ We want to retain people.”
