Rachel Weisz to star in kidnapping thriller ‘Snatchback’

CANNES, France, May 13 (UPI) — Rachel Weisz has signed on to new thriller Snatchback.

The 45-year-old actress will star in and produce the film with Frida Torresblanco (Pan’s Labyrinth) as co-producer and Pete Travis (Dredd) as writer and director.

Weisz will portray Maureen Dabbagh, a real-life woman whose ex-husband abducted their toddler daughter and took her to the Middle East in 1992. The movie version will see the character become a mercenary who helps other families recover kidnapped children.

“As told by Pete Travis in his riveting script, Mo’s story is powerful and exciting, but at its heart are deep maternal emotions that anyone in the world can relate to,” Protagonist Pictures CEO Mike Goodridge said in a statement. “It’s a powerhouse role and only an actress as gifted as Rachel could play it.”

Protagonist Pictures will shop the project at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Weisz has two films in competition, The Lobster and Youth. The actress is also scheduled for The Light Between Oceans with Michael Fassbender and a new James Marsh film with Colin Firth.
