Rep. Trey Gowdy endorses Marco Rubio

DES MOINES, Iowa, Dec. 29 (UPI) — Sen. Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), R-S.C., known for heading the investigation into the 2012 attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya, has thrown his support behind Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for the Republican nomination for president.

“Marco is a rock solid conservative and a leader we can trust. He is someone we can count on in Washington to stand true to his word,” Gowdy said in a campaign email sent out by Rubio’s campaign Tuesday afternoon. “And I know from experience: That is hard to find in Washington.”

Politico reported Gowdy also appeared at a campaign event with Rubio on Tuesday.

Gowdy’s announcement was rumored for days, and Donald Trump decided to try to get out in front of the announcement by bashing Gowdy in an appearance on Fox & Friends Sunday.

“His hearings were a disaster. Everybody was looking forward to something that was going to be really productive. And he didn’t win with those hearings. It was a total not-good for Republicans and for the country,” Trump told the hosts.

Moments after the formal announcement, Trump tweeted: “I hope @TGowdySC does better for Rubio than he did at the #Benghazi hearings, which were a total disaster for Republicans & America!”
