Report: Reds’ Aroldis Chapman fired gunshots, ‘choked’ girlfriend

DAVIE, Fla., Dec. 7 (UPI) — A rumor became a roadblock Monday when it was reported that Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman was involved in a serious domestic incident.

Chapman was reportedly traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday before news of the incident “held up the deal,” according to Yahoo Sports.

Police reports said that Chapman, 27, allegedly fired eight gunshots in the garage of his home after an argument with his girlfriend, according to Tim Brown and Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

His girlfriend also told police that Chapman “choked her” and “pushed her against a wall,” Yahoo Sports reported.

The incident occurred in October in Chapman’s Miami area home, in Davie, Florida. No arrests were made, but more than a dozen police officers went to the house at 11 p.m. Oct. 30, according to the report.

“Reds officials cautioned a deal had not been done,” according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Reds president of baseball operations told Rosecrans that “any trade of Chapman could take several weeks.” Jockety also told Rosecrans that the deal was not dead.

“We’ve talked to several clubs,” Jockety told Rosecrans. “I notified all of them tonight that we’d step back a couple of weeks or whatever it takes.”

Police said that no arrests were made “due to conflicting stories and a lack of cooperation from all parties involved,” according to the Yahoo Sports report.

Chapman is universally regarded as the hardest thrower in baseball. The “Cuban Missile” is a four-time All-Star selection with at least 33 saves and 106 strikeouts in his last four seasons.
