SYDNEY (AP) — Australian media are reporting Thailand’s highest-ranking police official in charge of human trafficking has fled to Australia and says he fears for his life.
The Guardian Australia newspaper is quoting Paween Pongsirin as saying that he plans to seek political asylum in Australia, after leading an investigation in Thailand that he says implicated police, government and military officials.
His interview with Australian media came weeks after reports surfaced that Paween had fled Thailand.
He headed a high-profile task force earlier this year investigating dozens of bodies that were discovered in jungle camps in southern Thailand, and exposed a network run by human traffickers.
Paween’s comments are bound to embarrass Thailand’s military government, which has vowed to crack down on human trafficking and corruption.
