Roger Goodell: NFL commissioner "alive and well" following Twitter hack

NEW YORK, June 7 (UPI) — Many argue that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has too much power.

But Tuesday, Goodell was deemed powerless and allegedly dead, following a hack of the league’s Twitter account.

At 12:36 p.m. Tuesday the account tweeted: “We regret to inform our fans that our commissioner, Roger Goodell, has passed away. He was 57. #RIP.”

The tweets were periodically deleted, but not without a battle, as the poser continued to reference the boss’s death.

The original tweet was retweeted more than 2,000 times.

“We have engaged law enforcement to look into the matter,” the NFL said in a statement on Tuesday. “We are reviewing and strengthening our cyber-security measures.”

NFL vice president of communications Brian McCarthy tweeted: “The @nfl Twitter account was hacked. @nflcommish is alive and well.”

The Twitter attack comes days after the accounts of actor Jack Black and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg suffered similar fate. It is also ironic, following the draft day drama of Laremy Tunsil, who lost loads of cash after his Twitter was allegedly hacked and posted a photo of him smoking marijuana through a gas mask, hours before he was drafted.

The NFL Twitter account has nearly 20 million followers.
