NEWCASTLE, Ireland, June 1 (UPI) — Rory McIlroy and girlfriend Erica Stoll went public with their relationship over the weekend.
The 26-year-old Northern Irish golfer and 29-year-old American PGA employee held hands as they arrived at the Irish Open golf tournament Sunday.
McIlroy and Stoll first met when the latter helped transport the pro to his tee time at the 2012 Ryder Cup. The golfer recently discussed his love in an interview with The London Times, although he did not mention Stoll by name.
“I have met someone new,” he revealed. “She doesn’t play golf, but she is involved with golf. I have known her for three years and we are good friends. If everything off the golf course is good, it allows you to be better on it as well.”
“I am very happy in my love life,” he shared. “We haven’t really been putting it out there. She is from America, which is why I like to spend time in Palm Beach. The past six or seven months have been really nice. That part of my life is going great.”
McIlroy and Stoll made their debut as a couple just over a year after the golfer’s split from fiancée Caroline Wozniacki. He ended his engagement to the 24-year-old Danish tennis player days after their wedding invitations went out, telling reporters he wasn’t ready for marriage.
