MOSCOW, Aug. 26 (UPI) — President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattal el-Sisi discussed bilateral relations Wednesday, focusing on opportunities to further develop their cooperation in trade and their economies.
This marks the second meeting in three months between Sisi and Putin.
“We have common opinion on the necessity of optimizing counteraction against terrorists and radicals; against the [backdrop] of the growth and potency of ISIS,” Putin said.
“With each meeting, the people of Egypt look with hope on the perspectives of our relations development in various spheres and not only in the sphere of economy, but the sphere of the fight against terrorism, particularly in the region, which is rocked by enormous problems of terrorism and extremist,” el-Sisi said, as reported by TASS.
The Kremlin’s press service reiterated that Egypt remains one of Russia’s major Middle East partners. Putin and el-Sisi were reportedly set to sign a deal for the construction of a nuclear power plant, a source close to the negotiations said. In June, Russia’s state-owned nuclear-energy company Rosatom delivered el-Sisi a proposal for the construction of the plant.
On Friday, Russia and Egypt signed an intergovernmental contract for the delivery of Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters, a source in the MiG Corporation told Interfax.
