March 24 (UPI) — Ryan Gosling offered an explanation this week for his laugh during the 2017 Academy Awards mix-up.

The 36-year-old actor said at the Adobe Summit in Las Vegas that he was “so relieved” nothing worse had happened when Moonlight was announced as the true Best Picture winner over his movie La La Land.

“I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt,” Gosling recalled, according to Entertainment Tonight. “I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head.”

“And then I just heard, ‘Oh, Moonlight won,’ and I was so relieved that I started laughing,” he explained. “But truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won … It’s such a groundbreaking film.”

La La Land was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture winner at the Oscars in February after presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were handed the wrong envelope. Gosling and the cast and crew were onstage accepting the award when Moonlight was confirmed as the actual winner.

“God, I love Moonlight so much! I’m so excited for Moonlight,” the actor’s co-star Emma Stone told reporters after the incident.

“It was an amazing thing to hear La La Land and of course we wanted to win. But we’re all so excited for Moonlight. I think it’s one of the best films of all time, so I was pretty beside myself,” the actress said.

Gosling will next star in Blade Runner 2049, which opens in theaters Oct. 6. He will also play astronaut Neil Armstrong in the new movie First Man.
