NEW YORK, June 23 (UPI) — What started off as a sweet and funny Instagram photo has now turned into a parenting debate.
Blake Lively posted a picture on Sunday for Father’s Day of Ryan Reynolds holding daughter James in a baby carrier, and now the parents are under fire for using the carrier incorrectly.
The photo garnered over 300,000 likes and thousands of comments from people defending and bashing the famous couple.
Happy Fathers Day!!! … @vancityreynolds Since the day our baby was born, I’ve felt so strongly in my heart that you were most likely the father. #ILoveYouSoMuchItsSilly A photo posted by Blake Lively (@blakelively) on Jun 21, 2015 at 7:29am PDT
Some expressed concerns that the 6-month-old was in an unsafe position, others advised Lively and Reynolds to get more acquainted with the carrier, while some fans stuck up for new parents.
“Although baby James is not in the most ideal position for this carrier, it’s really wonderful to see a happy dad trying his best to follow his instincts and snuggle his baby close,” Adriane Stare, certified babywearing educator and owner of New York City’s Wild Was Mama, tells Yahoo Parenting. “When a baby is carried heart-to-heart on mom or dad’s chest, even when not perfectly positioned, a parent is much more able to be attuned to how baby is doing versus when their babe is away from them in a stroller.”
A number of other celebrities have been criticized by the public before for posting photographs of questionable parenting choices on social media. A couple of months ago, a photo surfaced of Jill Duggar carrying her son in a sling incorrectly, which provoked similar concern.
