Sagem supplies optronic masts for Swedish submarines

BOULOGNE, France, Oct. 12 (UPI) — Four Swedish Navy submarines are to be fitted with optronic masts from Sagem of France through a contract issued by Sweden’s Saab Kockums.

The masts are sensor systems which operate like a periscope but without a periscope tube.

Sagem said it will supply its Series 30 optronic surveillance masts to outfit two future A26 class submarines and two Gotland class submarines currently in service.

It will also supply initial logistic services for the systems under the contract, which contains options for additional mast systems.

According to Sagem, its system uses non-penetrating technology for the subs’ pressure hulls and features a compact design and highly integrated multi-sensor architecture.

Series 30 optronic surveillance masts are already under production for Scorpène-class submarines built for the international market by French shipyard DCNS and for future French Navy Suffren-class nuclear attack submarines.

Sagem gave no details are to the monetary value of the contract received or a delivery schedule for the units.
