SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 29 (UPI) — San Francisco is cracking down on whomever is responsible for guerrilla art produced to promote Justin Bieber’s latest album.
Throughout the city’s sidewalks, stencil graffiti has been placed providing details of the Nov. 13 release date of Bieber’s Purpose, and has yet to wash away on its own.
The city attorney, Dennis Herrera, is reportedly condemning Bieber’s label, Universal Music Group, over the alternative promotion tactics and is asking them to help the city determine who was directly involved with the graffiti.
The graffiti, according to a letter penned by Herrera, “Illegally expoloits the city’s walkable neighborhoods and robust tourism; intentionally creates visual distractions that pose risks to pedestrians on busy rights of way; and irresponsibly tells our youth that likeminded lawlessness and contempt for public property are condoned and encouraged.”
Herrera writes he is hoping to resolve the issue without taking it to court, but warns civil penalties could result in $2,500 fines.
Before Purpose went on sale in mid-November, Bieber announced the album’s track list using commissioned graffiti by artists in major cities around the world including San Francisco.
