Scarlett Johansson: Black Widow solo movie a ‘possibility’

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 13 (UPI) — Scarlett Johansson says a Black Widow solo movie is still a possibility.

The 31-year-old actress revealed in the Power of Women issue of Variety that she’s “often” discussed a spinoff film with Marvel.

“I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances. I think there’s a lot of opportunity to mine that story line. She’s got a really rich origins story. There’s a lot of places you can go,” Johansson told the magazine.

“You can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program,” she suggested. “There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of.”

“[A prequel is] a possibility. There’s plenty of backstory. Or not. It could be something else,” the star said. “I think it would just have to be very much like its own specific thing. It would have to have its own specific vibe. It would have to be totally different than any of the other standalone films.”

Johansson debuted as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in the 2012 movie The Avengers and has since starred as the character in three other films. The actress said a spinoff “would probably become a reality” if “the fans wanted it enough.”

“I talked [to Marvel] about it often. It would have to fit in the idea of where they want to go. I’m invested in that character. Marvel is greatly invested in that character. If I did it, I’d have to do it while I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit. I don’t know how much longer that’s going to be,” she admitted.

Johansson had told Collider in April 2015 that she thinks “there’s room for a standalone movie.” That star said at the time that she and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have discussed a “standalone series” of films.
