Scimeca, Knierim win pairs title at US Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Alexa Scimeca and Christopher Knierim won their first pairs title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Scimeca and Knierim, who are engaged to be married, totaled 210.49 points, a record for the event, to beat Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier by 10.57.

Scimeca and Knierim were the runners-up at nationals in 2013 and were fourth a year ago. But the three teams that finished ahead of them are no longer competing.

Scimeca and Knierim successfully completed a quad twist to earn 136.48 points for their long program, also a U.S. Championships record.

The Americans send two pairs teams to the world championships.
