Several dead, wounded at Oregon community college; Gunman ‘no longer a threat’

ROSEBURG, Ore., Oct. 1 (UPI) — Authorities say a college campus shooting in Oregon Thursday morning has left numerous people wounded and several dead.

The shooting occurred at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg about 10:30 a.m. local time, officials said.

The Oregonian cited KVAL-TV in Eugene in reporting at least seven people were killed by the gunman and perhaps 20 people were wounded. NBC News also reported at least seven dead.

Douglas County Fire officials acknowledged the shooting on Twitter and asked people in the vicinity to stay away.

It wasn’t immediately clear where the gunman started shooting, but an official with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office cited witnesses as saying gunfire erupted near a science building on campus.

Authorities said the gunman was neutralized, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether the shooter was arrested or wounded. Neither a deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office nor County Commissioner Chris Boice were able to confirm the shooter’s status in interviews with KGW-TV.

“This is really kind of a shock for a community this size,” the deputy said. “My granddaughter attends [the college] and by the grace of God she was sick today.”

“We believe it was only one shooter,” said Boice, who was elected in November and took office in January. “I probably know someone whose family was impacted by this first hand.”

“We need a lot of prayer at this point,” he added.

One official said the gunman is “no longer a threat.”

A mass emergency response is ongoing in Roseburg, authorities said. Several medical helicopters were being sent to the region to attend to at least six critically injured victims, The Oregonian reported.

Authorities with several jurisdictions responded to the shooting, including the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

“This would be a disaster level response,” Jim Godbold, director of communications at PeaceHealth Riverbend Hospital, said.

The college, which has about 3,000 students, is located about 180 miles south of Portland.
