SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., Dec. 2 (UPI) — A report of a mass shooting in Southern California Wednesday has authorities responding to multiple victims and looking for as many as three heavily armed suspects, officials said.
The shooting was reported in the city of San Bernardino — about 60 miles east of Los Angeles — and the local fire department acknowledged 20 potential victims.
The sheriff’s office and fire officials tweeted details of the incident late Wednesday morning local time.
“[The San Bernardino Police Department] has confirmed an active shooter in the area,” the sheriff’s office said in the tweet.
A spokeswoman for the San Bernardino Police Department told reporters that up to three active shooters were reported at the scene, inside the Inland Regional Center, the Los Angeles Times reported. The facility aids in the development of persons with mental disabilities.
The spokeswoman said the suspects, as many as three, were heavily armed and possibly wearing body armor.
