NEW YORK, March 18 (UPI) — Shailene Woodley does not like to call herself a feminist because for her, the title is “still a label.”
The 23-year-old actress opened up about her controversial views on feminism during her interview for the April issue of Nylon magazine, where she asserted she does not “want to be defined by one thing.”
“Why do we have to have that label to divide us?” the Insurgent star said of feminism. “We should all be able to embrace one another regardless of our belief system and regardless of the labels that we have put upon ourselves.”
Woodley first shared her seemingly anti-feminism views in 2014 stating that there needs to be a power balance between women and men.
“I don’t know how we as women expect men to respect us because we don’t even seem to respect each other,” the actress told Time. “There’s so much jealousy, so much comparison and envy… And it’s just so silly and heartbreaking in a way.”
While addressing the reaction to said interview, the actress said that if people spent as much time as they did criticizing her comments “focusing on the genocide that’s going on right now in parts of Africa” a lot could have been accomplished.
“Change is not going to come from focusing on the small things that actors say,” she added.
Nylon’s issue featuring Woodley hits stand on March 31.
