Sheldon and Amy to get intimate on ‘The Big Bang Theory’

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (UPI) — The Big Bang Theory has a momentous occasion planned for Sheldon and Amy.

Executive producer Steve Molaro revealed the longtime couple, portrayed by Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik, will finally have sex in a forthcoming story line. Molara announced the news on the CBS comedy’s website Tuesday.

“After five years of dating, we felt the time was right for Sheldon and Amy to finally consummate their relationship, and we’re so excited for the audience to see the journey over the next several episodes,” he said. The plot line will begin on the Dec. 17 episode.

Sheldon and Amy broke up in the season 8 finale, but are expected to reconcile ahead of the consummation. Bialik discussed the couple in an interview with Yahoo! TV in September, saying she appreciates the pair’s unique dynamic.

“I think the Amy/Sheldon relationship can teach a lot about relationships in general, and the way we view them,” she opined. “I’d be hard-pressed to find another show that has a committed and intimate romantic relationship that’s not sexual. Especially for as long as we’ve done that, I think, in a very authentic and sweet way.”

The Big Bang Theory airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET, and co-stars Johnny Galecki as Leonard, Kaley Cuoco as Penny, Simon Helberg as Howard and Kunal Nayyar as Raj. Bob Newhart will reprise Arthur Jeffries on the momentous Dec. 17 episode.
