GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Simone Biles tied the record for most gold medals by a female at the world gymnastics championships on Sunday, earning the ninth of her career after a nearly flawless performance in the balance beam final.
The three-time all-around champion posted a score 15.358, more than a point better than silver medalist Sanne Weavers of the Netherlands and bronze medalist Paulin Schaefer of Germany.
Biles now has 14 world medals in all, tops among American women. The 18-year-old will have a chance to add to that total later Sunday when she competes in the floor exercise final. She had the highest score on her favorite event during qualifying.
Earlier Sunday, North Korea’s Se Gwang Ri won his second straight men’s vault title, edging Romania’s Marian Dragulescu and Donnell Whittenburg of the U.S.
