LONDON, Jan. 8 (UPI) — Two European soccer clubs are taking a look into, or taking a look at other people taking a look at themselves in this case, banning ‘selfie sticks’ from games. The “selfie stick” is an extendable pole that allows a person to hold his or her cell phone or camera from a far distance so that they don’t have to use their arm to capture a picture of themselves.
Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have now banned the sticks from their home stadiums after complaints from fans, according to Sports Illustrated. The two clubs cited safety concerns as a cause for the ban.
The sticks were already banned during games, but will be confiscated if now found on the stadium grounds, according to BBC.
“We can confirm that ‘selfie sticks’ are banned on matchdays at Emirates Stadium,” An Arsenal spokesman told the Camden New Journal. “The club’s ground regulations prohibit any object that could be used as a weapon or could compromise public safety.”
Arsenal will allow its fans to use the sticks on stadium tours.
