Sofia Vergara recalls Joe Manganiello’s proposal: ‘My heart was melting’

Jan. 26 (UPI) — Sofia Vergara says her heart melted during husband Joe Manganiello’s proposal.

The 44-year-old actress and 40-year-old actor appear on the March cover of Hola! USA, and discussed their whirlwind romance and marriage in the interview.

“My heart was melting and I simply said, ‘But of course!’” Vergara recalled. “He is so funny and ever since we met, that has been really important. We even talk to each other all the time in this little voice that we made up, like a couple of dorks.”

The Modern Family star and Magic Mike actor tied the knot in November 2015 after a year and a half of dating. Manganiello had bought an engagement ring for Vergara shortly after they started seeing each other.

“We got married very fast,” the actor acknowledged. “We didn’t hesitate for a second. We’re completely compatible.”

“We realized very early on that we each had to put the person’s happiness and wellbeing ahead of our own,” he said. “Once you realize that kind of trust has manifested, you hang on for dear life. Or in my case, you go and buy a ring.”

Vergara was previously wed to Joe Gonzalez from 1991 to 1993, and shares 24-year-old son Manolo with her ex-husband. She told the magazine she largely put dating on hold until her son left home for college.

“Partly because I hadn’t found the right person and I knew that if I moved in with someone, it would have a psychological effect on my son,” the star explained. “I wasn’t going to bring a man into my son’s home.”

Vergara indulged Manganiello, a Pittsburgh Steelers superfan, by attending the NFL team’s game against the New England Patriots on Sunday. She shared a photo of herself bundled up for the game, writing, “#HereWeGo #thegoodwife.”
