LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 (UPI) — Jill Scott accepted the first Lady of Soul Award at BET’s Soul Train Awards on Sunday night, saying she never focused on trying to be sexy.
The famed R&B artist gave a heartfelt speech at the network’s award show, saying her goal as a songwriter was not to win fame with her looks, but with her art.
“The goal was to write something that you could relate to, the goal was to be in your house when you make that new baby, to be there to squash that argument, to incite it if necessary,” she said. “I never wanted to be sexy for anybody, I swear I didn’t. But I did want to write some sexy stuff for you.”
The 43-year-old singer added that she appreciated the immense respect she’s gotten from the industry since her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? in 2000. “I thank you for treating me with respect,” she said. “Because I earned it. And I like it.”
Scott not only walked away from the event as the first Lady of Soul Award winner, but also earned the top spot as Best R&B/Soul Female Artist.
Scott stirred fans during a celebratory musical performance after accepting the award when BET broadcasted the entire clip in black and white. It is not known whether the move was intentional, but the anomaly sparked a conversation among netizens who felt cheated, VH1 reports.
Many viewers questioned whether their televisions had malfunctioned while others were not amused by the “Instagram filter,” placed over Scott’s performance.
