SEOUL, Oct. 22 (UPI) — A unit in North Korea’s People’s Army has kept busy since Kim Jong Un ordered the construction of a pig farm to solve the military’s food shortages.
A source in North Korea’s Jagang province told Radio Free Asia “Kim Jong Un instructed every brigade of a Korean People’s Army unit to build a pig farm, in order solve a meat shortage for People’s Army soldiers.”
The source said in June the North Korean leader had ordered Korean People’s Army Unit 810, a key division of Pyongyang’s military, to find a solution to the army’s food shortage, and Kim recently visited with Unit 350, and directed soldiers to build a pig farm. One person was selected from each brigade of the KPA unit for the construction, according to the source.
Unit 810 is a military unit highly regarded by Kim, and the leader has showered the division with effusive praise in the past. A source in North Hamgyong province said the unit was reorganized after the execution of Kim’s uncle Jang Song Thaek. Under Jang, Unit 810 was the trading arm of Section 54 of the military’s General Political Bureau – the section in charge of the foreign currency earnings of North Korea’s military.
After Jang’s execution, the Workers’ Party administrative unit was dissolved and mines under Section 54 were returned to Pyongyang’s Cabinet. Section 54’s ranches and fish farms were then placed under the supervision of Unit 810, the source said.
Kim’s pig farm ordinance has not been made public, but on Thursday Pyongyang time, state-controlled KCNA reported Kim toured Pyongyang’s Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Complex.
Yonhap reported Kim inspected a new underground train that had been developed after July, when Kim had said North Korean trains need to modernize.
Kim showered praise on the factory for “keeping its promise” to produce an underground train in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party.
