‘Spartans’ clash with Beijing police while promoting cafe

BEIJING, July 23 (UPI) — A gathering of dozens of 300-style Spartans in Beijing for a restaurant promotion ended when police broke up the event and detained at least two performers.

The Spartans gathered Wednesday in Sanlitun village to deliver food from the Sweetie Salad cafe to local offices, but police soon arrived and complained the beefcake parade was obstructing traffic.

At least two performers were detained for allegedly resisting police attempts to disperse the Spartans.

A post to Sweetie Salad’s official account on microblogging site Weibo said officials have been in contact with police to discuss the “misunderstanding.”

Sweetie Salad apologized for the incident in a statement.

“We have learned how inexperienced we are as a start-up company when it comes to organizing offline activities,” the statement reads. “We’ll strictly comply with the police orders, keeping our brand perception while maintaining public order and good social influence.”
