CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire’s House speaker is warning lawmakers to be civil after a social media spat over a bill barring women from exposing their nipples in public.
Republican Rep. Shawn Jasper’s admonishment Wednesday at the start of the legislative session comes after two male legislators were criticized for Facebook comments aimed at Democratic Rep. Amanda Bouldin, who opposes the legislation and notes its sponsors were men.
Republican Rep. Josh Moore replied that women who want to expose their nipple should approve of men who want to “grab it.” Republican Rep. Al Baldasaro disparaged Bouldin’s appearance.
Jasper didn’t specifically mention those comments. But he said any inflammatory remarks could bring negative attention as the nation’s eyes are on New Hampshire and its leadoff presidential primary.
The bill includes an exemption for breastfeeding.
