Washington (AFP) – San Antonio Spurs center Pau Gasol underwent surgery on Friday to repair a broken ring finger on his left hand and will miss the next few weeks of the NBA season, according to multiple reports.

Yahoo Sports and ESPN, each citing unnamed sources in website reports, said the 36-year-old Spaniard had the operation so he would be able to return as quickly as possible.

ESPN said the timetable for Gasol’s return could be four to eight weeks while Yahoo said it could go as long as six weeks.

Gasol broke the finger during pre-game warm-ups before Thursday’s 118-104 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Six-time All-Star Gasol is averaging 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds in his first season with the Spurs after spending the past two campaigns with Chicago.

Gasol played for Memphis from 2001 to 2008 before joining the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he won NBA crowns in 2009 and 2010.
