Standoff follows shooting death of Delaware trooper

April 27 (UPI) — A Delaware state trooper was shot to death Wednesday outside of a convenience store in Bear, Del., authorities said, and the suspect had barricaded himself at home.

Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard, 32, an 8 1/2-year veteran of the Delaware State Police was shot multiple times by a man who fled the scene. A second man was arrested at the scene.

“This is a sad day for our state and for the Delaware State Police family,” said Delaware State Police Superintendent Nathaniel McQueenMcQueen

“My heart is with the officer’s family and the officers who have served beside him,” Delaware Gov. Gov. John Carney said in a statement.

Police surrounded the suspect’s house. He refused to surrender and fired multiple shots at officers, state said police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.

No other officers were injured.
