Taiwan orders Lockheed Martin Sniper targeting pod

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 13 (UPI) — Lockheed Martin is to provide its Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod for F-16 fighters of Taiwan, the 20th international customer for the targeting system.

The initial contract with the Taiwan Air Force calls for the delivery of two systems and their integration.

The company will also provide integration support of LANTIRN targeting and navigation pods on Taiwan’s recently upgraded F-16s.

“With Sniper ATP, pilots will have access to unmatched imagery for precision targeting and non-traditional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance efforts, enabling greater overall mission success,” said Marc Nazon, Sniper ATP international program manager at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

The Sniper ATP can be used on a variety of aircraft. Among them are: F-2, F-15, F-16, F-18, and A-10 fighters, as well as B-1 and B-52 bombers.

The system detects, identifies, automatically tracks and laser designates small tactical targets at long ranges. It also supports the use of laser and GPS-guided weapons against multiple targets.

Lockheed Martin did not disclose the value of the contract.
