Taylor Heinicke: Houston Texans call up quarterback from practice squad

Dec. 15 (UPI) — The Houston Texans have signed practice squad quarterback Taylor Heinicke to the active roster.

Houston announced the promotion on Friday. The Texans also waived rookie nose tackle Chunky Clements.

The move comes after Texans quarterback Tom Savage suffered a concussion in a Week 14 loss to the San Francisco Giants. Savage has missed practice all week. He has completed 56.1 percent of his throws this season for 1,412 yards, five scores and six interceptions in eight games.

T.J. Yates was the only healthy quarterback on the Texans’ active roster before the Heinicke signing. Yates completed 53.8 percent of his throws for 175 yards and two scores in Week 14. He is expected to start in Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, who own the best pass defense in the NFL. The Jaguars and Texans kickoff at 1 p.m. Sunday at EverBank Field in Jacksonville.

Heinicke talked to reporters on Wednesday about the opportunity.

“Hopefully, if I do have to go out there, I play well and hopefully get this team a W,” Heinicke told reporters.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien expressed confidence in Yates during his Wednesday press conference.

“He’s been there before,” O’Brien said. “He knows our system. He’s a smart guy. I thought he did some good things on Sunday in a tough spot. It’s not hard to get him ready, you know what I mean? It’s more about getting the team physically ready to go from a health standpoint, that’s the big thing. T.J. will be ready to go.”
