Texas governor jinxes Houston Astros with tweet

HOUSTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) — In a game filled with superstition, Texas governor Greg Abbott should have known what was coming.

After the Houston Astros took a 6-2 lead Monday against the Kansas City Royals, Abbott’s office tweeted: “Congrats to the @astros on advancing to the #ALCS! Hoping for an all-Texas #ALCS. Looking at you @Rangers.”

The Astros lost its lead and the game 9-6.

Cliff Saunders, of Sports Talk 790, took a screen grab of the later-deleted tweet. Saunders also reported: “Gov. Abbott Tweet was sent by his office @GovAbbott Did not come from Governor’s personal feed, which is @GregAbbott_TX so it was a staffer.”

Abbott tweeted from an alternate account: “Hey @Astros fans. Unfollow –> @GovAbbott. Follow the REAL Greg Abbott right here. No predictions. Just support.”

Both Twitter accounts are verified.

After the tweet, multiple politicians commented and also took screenshots.

The 2-2 series resumes with a 8:07 p.m. matchup Wednesday in Kansas City.
