LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (UPI) — The Bastard Executioner has been canceled after a disappointing debut season.
Series creator Kurt Sutter confirmed the news to reporters on Wednesday, the day after the FX drama’s season 1 finale. Sutter and FX chose to axe the show after a sharp decrease in viewers led to concern over the series’ financial viability.
“The numbers just didn’t sustain the cost of the show, quite frankly,” he told Variety. “It’s all math at the end of the day. We couldn’t establish that core audience that allows you to figure out your advertising paradigm and whether or not the show is affordable.”
Sutter broke the news to the cast and crew in an e-mail, and bought ad space on entertainment sites to post a thank you. He told The Hollywood Reporter the “most heartbreaking part” of the cancellation is that there “really was a sense of everyone being excited to tell more stories.”
The Bastard Executioner premiered in September, and ran for a 10-episode first season. Lee Jones starred as Wilkin Brattle, a 14th century Welsh knight who assumes the identity of Gawain Maddox the Executioner in his quest for revenge after a betrayal.
Sutter is best known for creating FX series Sons of Anarchy, which ended after seven seasons in December. The director is still seeking a showrunner for a Mayans spinoff, telling Deadline he wants to find a Latino writer “who understands the world and the culture.”
