The House’s big day: Budget deal vote, GOP nominating Ryan

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House is ready to vote on a bipartisan pact charting a two-year budget truce, and Republicans are set to nominate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) as the chamber’s new speaker.

GOP leaders hope both events Wednesday will help transform their party’s recent chaos into calm in time for next year’s presidential and congressional campaigns.

House and Senate leaders of both parties are urging lawmakers to back the budget agreement, which would resolve fights over defense and domestic spending and federal borrowing until early 2017.

Expectations are that the House will pass the bill Wednesday and the Senate next week.

The full House is set to formally elect Ryan, the Wisconsin Republican, as speaker Thursday. He succeeds Ohio GOP Rep. John Boehner, who abruptly quit last month under pressure from conservatives.
